How To Exfoliate Your Skin (Without Causing Irritation!)

We’ve all been told by countless blogs, Instagram posts, and magazines that exfoliating is important for our skin - but overdo it and you’ll be lift with more irritation than radiance. So, how exactly should you go about exfoliating? Below, we go through all the steps you need to reveal a fresh complexion, without falling victim to scaliness or excessive flaking. First off, it’s important to read the instructions of your exfoliator carefully - depending on the strength and types of ingredients used you may be able to use the product as many as three times in the week, whereas for others you may want to limit it to just once or twice weekly. Regardless of how many times per week you decide to exfoliate, we always recommend to do it in the evening and avoid too much time in direct sunlight during the days.

Before exfoliating, cleanse thoroughly and gently towel dry your face. From there, you’ll be ready to treat yourself to some skincare TLC with our Renewing Facial Polish, so grab a small dollop in your fingertips and get to work! Massage the polish gently into your skin in a circular motion. Don’t let the product sit too long on your face to prevent any irritation from occurring. Rinse off with lukewarm water and towel dry your face once more.

The follow up to your exfoliation routine is arguably the most important step. Moisturize with something gentle - be sure to avoid any powerful active ingredients like retinol or glycolic acid, as these can inflame your fresh new layers of skin. A simple hyaluronic acid serum or facial oil will do just the trick. In the mornings, always be sure to follow up with a daily moisturizer and sun protection - we recommend at least SPF 35. Repeat this routine weekly as desired, but if you start to experience any discomfort or excessive flakiness, give your skin a rest and let it heal before exfoliating again.
